GROTON, Conn. (AP) — The U.S. Navy is commemorating 119 years of the American submarine force with a celebration Friday in Groton.

A cake-cutting is planned at the Historic Ship Nautilus and Submarine Force Museum to mark another year of service to the country by its undersea force.

Speakers at the public ceremony are expected to include Rear Adm. Leonard "Butch" Dollaga, commander of the Undersea Warfighting Development Center.

It was on April 11, 1900, that the U.S. Navy purchased an experimental submarine that would become the nation's first commissioned submarine, USS Holland. The 53-foot-long vessel was purchased from John P. Holland and the Holland Torpedo Boat Company.
