HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - Members of the Connecticut Army National Guard are preparing for a mission to Cuba.
Some 120 members of the guard's 643rd Military Police Company are poised for their first-ever deployment to the island nation to support Operation Enduring Freedom. They will be responsible for detainee operations at Guantanamo Bay.
The soldiers will be the guests of honor at a send-off ceremony Tuesday afternoon in Hartford. They'll go to Texas first for additional training before going to Cuba, said officials. The deployment is expected in Mid-March.
This is the second deployment of Connecticut troops to Cuba in the last four years. Members of the 192nd Military Police Battalion deployed on a similar mission in 2015.
