(South Windsor, Conn./WTIC) - Officials in South Windsor say they're taking action after the discovery of mosquitoes infected with the Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus.

The town is declaring a public health emergency as a result.

Officials say they have been in touch with the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection to determine treating town parks and schools.

As a result, outdoor facilities and parks in South Windsor will close at 5:30 p.m. until the first killing frost of the season.

In addition, standing water and catch basins will be treated to minimize the presences of mosquito breeding grounds.

Town officials remind residents to take precautions if they are outside, particularly at dusk and dawn.

That also includes making sure door and screens are secure, wearing long clothes when outside, and using insect repellant.
