(Windsor Locks, Conn./WTIC) - The Connecticut Fire Academy wants residents to stay safe, particularly during this busy holiday season.
Experts say the cold weather months, especially, can see an uptick in home fires.
Academy public education coordinator Alan Zygmunt says the message remains the same when it comes to holiday lights: look out for exposed and frayed cords or wires, and try not to overload electrical outlets...
Zygmunt also says they advise checking smoke and CO detectors on a monthly basis, never leaving a stove or oven unattended, and if you have a fireplace, storing ashes in a metal can with a cover, keeping them a far enough distance away from the home, usually a minimum of ten feet.
