HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC Radio)_ The first human case of West Nile Virus is reported in Connecticut.

The State Department of Public Health reports a Waterbury resident between the ages of 40-49 is recovering after falling ill from West Nile Virus during the second week of July. The patient had a fever. Laboratory tests confirmed the presence of West Nile Virus antibodies.

Officials say that although the patient lives in Waterbury, the origin of their illness has been traced back to the Newington and Wethersfield area.

There are precautions that can be taken to mitigate the spread of the virus. Health experts recommend eliminating standing water, wearing long clothing, and keeping pools clean and chlorinated.
