(Southington, Conn./WTIC) -  Police in Southington say a local resident is being treated after he was attacked by a fox over the weekend.

Officers say the resident heard a commotion outside his home Saturday where some wild turkeys had been congregating.

Police Lieutenant Steve Elliott says the fox charged the homeowner, biting his ankle as he ran away.

The victim tried to rid himself of the fox by slamming a sliding door on its neck.

Elliott says the fox latched on to the resident's ankle and wouldn't let go initially.

Once he freed himself with help from another resident, Elliott says the homeowner grabbed a pellet gun and shot and killed the animal.

Elliott says subsequent tests indicated that the fox was rabid and the homeowner is receiving treatment.
