(WTIC-AM) -- An elephant that had been displayed at the Big E has died.
The fair says Beulah the Asian elephant died at the age of 54.
She was owned by the Commerford Zoo in Goshen.
The Big E says the elephant died of natural causes.
The fair says the Commerford family asked for time to grieve, before an announcement was made about the elephant's death.
Beulah and two other elephants owned by the Commerford Zoo were the subject of an unsuccessful animal right lawsuit, that sought to have them released.
Animal rights lawyers argued that the elephants should have some of the same rights as people, including the right to be released from captivity.
In recent years, animal rights groups had asked that the Big-E stop displaying elephants.
A Big-E spokesperson did not immediately say where or when the elephant died.
