Killingly High Dropping Native American Mascot

KILLINGLY, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - Killingly is the latest Connecticut town to scrap Native American-themed high school mascots.The Redmen mascot will be dropped. A statement from Killingly Board of Education Chairman John Burns says while it was never the intention to be disrespectful to Native American culture, it's time to retire the current mascot and begin a new tradition at Killingly High School.The chairman of the Nipmuc Tribal Council has called the use of Native American mascots, often portrayed as caricatures or cartoons, demeaning.Education officials say they will seek community input, in finding a mascot that's a unifying symbol for all Killingly High students.
