(Southington, Conn./WTIC) - Southington Police are charging a man after they say he assaulted a woman and fired a shot through the wall of their motel room on Tuesday.

Officers were dispatched to the Motel 6 on Queen Street in town for a reported dispute.

They say 54-year-old Joshua Wilson got into an argument with the woman staying in the room with him, during which police say he threw her to the floor and struck her several times in the head.

Police say the shot fired into the wall also penetrated two other rooms that were unoccupied.

The firearm was later found in a box on motel property.  Police say Wilson did not have a permit for the weapon.

In addition, police seized several illegal high capacity magazines.

Wilson faces a slew of charges including unlawful discharge, assault, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief.  He's being held on $500,000 bond.

Police say the victim sustained minor injuries but declined medical treatment.
