(WTIC Radio) - Connecticut U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy says he now supports impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump.
"I am deeply sorry that our nation must begin this journey toward impeachment," Murphy said in a statement Tuesday morning. "Up until these recent developments, I had resisted calling for the House to begin impeachment proceedings, choosing instead to allow the House to consider its options free from senatorial advice."
The Democrat said Monday the ``gravity'' of the Republican president prodding the new leader of financially-dependent Ukraine to help him investigate any corruption related to former Democratic Vice President Joe Biden has given him "some serious thought'' to his impeachment stance.
Murphy says he doesn't know how he can live in a country that allows its president ``to openly admit to this kind of corruption and get away with it.'' Trump has said his call with the Ukrainian president was "congratulatory'' and focused on corruption.
Murphy met in May with the Ukrainian president, who voiced concern about possibly losing American security aid.
