(Hartford, Conn.WTIC) - In the third in a series of reports on college athletics, Senator Chris Murphy says colleges and universities need to do a better job protecting athletes from serious injuries.
Murphy says many times, coaches go against the advice of the team's medical staff in putting players in situations that lead to further injury or complications.
In Connecticut, state Senator Derek Slap says he's had talks with schools like UConn and hopes that legislation will be considered in the next legislative session which begins in February.
In addition, he says women's athletics would benefit from new laws in efforts to level the field when it comes to pay when athletes turn pro.
Murphy says a couple of things the NCAA can do: guarantee the scholarships of student athletes and possibly provide them with health coverage.
