NEW CANAAN, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - Two New Canaan officers rescued a burning motorist from a vehicle fully engulfed in flames Thursday morning.

Police say Sergeant Peter Condos and Officer Tom Patten found the motorist on fire when responding to a report of a vehicle in flames off Rosebrook Road at around 9 a.m.

The two officers attended to the motorist despite the risk of the vehicle exploding, according to police.

Officials say the officers put snow on the burning motorist and used their bare hands to put out the flames on the motorist's body before providing urgent medical care.

Police say the motorist got advanced care for severe burns from the New Canaan Volunteer Ambulance Corps (NCVAC). Afterward, NCVAC transported the motorist to the hospital.

One officer got minor injuries during the incident.

New Canaan Chief of Police Leon Krolikowski says the two officers will soon receive the Department's Lifesaving Award.

Krolikowski says, "Thanks to their bravery, training, professionalism and expert care, they saved a life."
