GREENWICH, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - Greenwich police have arrested a Norwalk man on charges that he scammed an elderly woman out of more than $80,000.

Emmanuel Bazil, 25, called the woman claiming that her nephew had been arrested and that she needed to help, police allege. The woman was instructed to send cash in packages to foreclosed homes around Fairfield County.

On Tuesday, police say Bazil called the woman again and told her to send $20,000 to a home in Greenwich. The woman did send a package, but it did not include any cash, they said.

Police say officers caught Bazil trying to intercept the package. He's charged with larceny, attempted larceny, illegal possession of marijuana, trespassing, and larceny against an elderly person. Bazil was held on $250,000 bond pending arraignment in Stamford Superior Court April 17.

Police say Bazil also scammed elderly victims in California.
