(Hartford, Conn./WTIC) - A state's attorney's report says a Hartford police detective was justified in using deadly force on a suspect last summer.

Torrington State's Attorney Matthew Gedansky says Detective Zack Sherry's life was in danger, along with the lives of other officers that night last July when Alphonso Zaporta was shot on the Interstate 84 Capitol Avenue on ramp.

Police had been tracking Zaporta along city streets before he fled attempting to get on to the highway.

His car came to a stop in heavy traffic, after which a struggle ensued and Zaporta gained control of a police weapon.

The incident was captured on police body camera.

Gendensky concluded that Sherry, a 14-year veteran of the force, "reasonably believed the use of deadly force was necessary".

In a statement, interim Police Chief Jason Thody says regardless of what transpired, a life was lost in the incident and extends continued condolences to Zaporta's family.
