Swimming Closed Near Saugatuck River Beaches

Westport, CT - WTIC 1080 News -  The Westport Fire Department Marine Unit was notified of a reported sewage leak in the Saugatuck River around 1:30 Saturday afternoon. 

A leak was found what appeared to be sewage was flowing up from under the river to the surface.  Several agencies were notifed including the Westport Public Works Department,  the CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, and the U.S. Coast Guard. 

The Sewer Department immediately ensured that the pumps were shut down and called in multiple vacuum trucks to manually haul the sewage across the river to the treatment plant.

The Health Department and Selectman’s Office decided that the beaches would be closed for swimming as well as shellfishing until testing verifies the water is safe.
