WINDHAM, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - A case of tuberculosis has been confirmed at the Charles H. Barrows STEM Academy in Windham.
A letter to parents went home Wednesday, notifying parents and guardians. Education and health officials are recommending testing for students and staff who came in to contact with the affected individual in a class or after-school activity. However, they stress that the risk of someone contracting the disease is "very small."
A school spokeswoman declined to say if the confirmed case is in a staff member or student.
TB is a potentially fatal disease caused by bacteria that mainly affects the lungs. It is fully treatable.
There were 51 cases of TB reported in Connecticut last year.
Barrows is a magnet school with roughly 580 students in grades K-8.
