(Hartford, Conn./WTIC) - Governor-elect Ned Lamont has tapped longtime state Senator Beth Bye to a key post.

Lamont is nominating Bye to head the Office of Early Childhood.

Bye has represented the 5th state senate district covering West Hartford, Farmington, Bloomfield, and Burlington since 2010.

In making the announcment, Lamont praised Bye for what he called her devotion toward building a "more progressive and equitable early childhood system".

The Office of Early Childhood was created in 2013 in an effort to improve early childhood programs in the state, said Lamont.

As a result of her nomination, Bye will resign her state senate seat.

She'll begin serving as Commissioner-designate later this month.

The Bye nomination will be sent to the full General Assembly for it's consideration.
