HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC) - The State Housing Department has awarded a $480,000 grant to three towns to help homeowners with crumbling foundations test for Pyrrhotite, the mineral that's linked to the problem.

Vernon, Ellington, and Stafford will be splitting that money to help residents with crumbling foundations test for the mineral. In the past, this test has been the first out-of-pocket expense affected homeowners face.

Ellington first selectman Lori Spielman says the money will primarily benefit low to moderate income households. Each can receive up to $5,000 under the program.
