(Hartford, Conn./WTIC) - For the first time in decades, workers at Stop and Shop supermarkets in New England are on strike.
A spokesman for the union representing 31,000 workers in Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts says they walked as of 1:00 this afternoon.
Workers took a strike vote last month after weeks of negotiating toward a new contract with parent company Ahold fell through.
The spokesman says the company is calling for health care and other givebacks after realizing some $2 billion in profits last year.
