MERIDEN, Conn. (AP) — A lawsuit against a Connecticut police department filed by the estate of a woman who hanged herself in her holding cell is scheduled to go to trial early next year.

The Record-Journal reports that the lawsuit was filed against Meriden police on behalf of 29-year-old Erica Moreno, who hanged herself in January 2016.

The $1 million suit alleges police were negligent in failing to properly monitor Moreno in her cell and for not removing the drawstring in her sweat pants that she used to asphyxiate herself.

Moreno was survived by two children. Her estate rejected a settlement offer from the city.

The lawsuit names eight officers as well as the police chief as defendants.

A department spokesman says it is the city's policy not to comment on pending lawsuits.
