(New York, NY/WTIC) - The University of Connecticut is headed back to the Big East Conference.

The formal announcement took place this afternoon at Madison Square Garden in New York.

A half dozen years after leaving for the American Athletic Conference, UConn will fork over $12 million to leave the AAC and another $3.5 million to reenter the Big East.

University trustees voted Wednesday to accept the Big East invite.

Outgoing UConn President Susan Herbst says the school stands to save millions of dollars in travel expense.

It's still to be determine just where the UConn football team will wind up; the Big East does not sponsor football.
