Wanted Man Arrested in Windsor Locks

WINDSOR LOCKS, Conn. (WTIC) – On Monday at 7:35 p.m., the Windsor Locks Police Department was contacted by Inspector’s from the Chief States Attorney’s Office in Torrington with information on the whereabouts of a wanted man.

Joel Griffiths, who was said to be staying at the Quality Inn, was to be sentenced to a prison term related to several narcotic and weapon charges.  He has an extensive criminal history revolving around the illegal drug trade and weapons possession.


He has also been pursued by bail enforcement for the past month.

Police and Inspectors considered various options to apprehend Griffiths with a minimal amount of danger or risk to those involved and in the general public.  The North Central Municipal Emergency Services Team was activated to respond where all surrounding hotel rooms were determined to be vacant and the immediate area was cleared of bystanders.

The tactical team took their positions and were able to make contact with Griffiths.  After a dialog, officers secured his surrender to police and he was taken into custody without further incident.

An investigation discovered a loaded handgun, numerous cell phones and thousands of dollars in cash and jewelry related to Griffiths.  Investigators found he was also attempting to conceal his identity using an alias to avoid detection by law enforcement.

He was charged with Criminal Impersonation and Possessions of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, with a High Capacity Magazine, Identity Theft, Criminal Impersonation and two Forgery counts.

Additionally, he was charged with three separate cases of Failure to Appear in court for previous gun and drug charges.

Griffiths was held on bond and appeared in court on Tuesday.
