WATERBURY, Conn. (WTIC) – Waterbury Police announced that nine individuals have been charged in a 2018 shooting that killed a 30-year old mother of four and left another woman paralyzed.
During a news conference on Monday, Police Chief Frank Spagnolo released the new details in the incident that killed Fransua Guzman and left Darlene Mazon paralyzed from gunshot wounds.
He said the two were caught in the cross-fire of a gang related shooting between the 960 gang and the ATM gang.
Of the nine individuals charged, one remains at large and three are minors. The arrested individuals are Jermaine Gilbert, Laderrick Jones, Gabriel Pulliam, Dayquain Sinisterra and Julian Scott (the minors names are not listed). D’Andre Burrus is the final suspect wanted by police – he is considered armed and dangerous.
Chief Spagnolo added Scott and Pulliam were the shooters in the 2018 incident and the seven others were conspirators.
The arrest warrants are part of the enhanced efforts of the department’s Gang Task Force – who, for the past 18 months, have worked to curb the increase in gang-related violence in Waterbury.
Since the task force began their enhanced efforts, the two gangs have suffered serious setbacks and overall violent crime in the city has decreased as well.
Chief Spagnolo commended the work of the force and added their work could not be possible without the help from the community.
Moving forward, he said more arrests are likely, including arrests stemming from the incident in October, 2018.
