What Athletes Are Doing in Quarantine

Freddie Freeman
by Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

It’s for our own safety, obviously, but are you getting a little crazy sitting at home every single day? Imagine being a professional athlete. Normally they are training, playing or traveling 10 to 12 hours per day. And now all that energy is... sitting at home (their poor spouses!)

So what are some of our favorite players doing in this unprecedented time? Luckily, social media can tell us:

Devin Booker: The Suns’ sharpshooter is commonly found on Twitch, the video game streaming service. With a little more downtime than normal, he’s been on most days playing a variety of games. And he even teamed up with the Suns to turn it into a fundraising opportunity.

Video games are a common theme among athletes these days. It is, after all, one of the only ways we can communicate with each other while practicing social distancing.

Stephen Curry: Being extra careful, the Warriors’ superstar appears to be wearing some sort of mask at home. Much to the apparent dismay of his daughter, Riley, a silly mask won’t stop him from enjoying a nice glass of wine with his dinner.

Freddie Freeman: We know the Braves’ slugger will be ready for Opening Day. He’s at home taking batting practice and hitting absolute BOMBS. He obviously must have a long history with the pitcher, because the stare down is also legendary.

Brooks Koepka: The four-time major winner was getting his time in at the range, casually hitting an eight-iron 194 yards and then taunting Justin Thomas and Rickie Fowler. Why, exactly? He did it left-handed, and, uh, he’s not a lefty.

Brooks Laich: A lot of these things are light-hearted and silly – ya know, the fun part of social media. Even in retirement, former hockey player Brooks Laich isn’t having that – he needs to get in his reps. He started the “At Home Workout Challenge”, with a series of Instagram videos outlining assorted workouts you can do right from home. While he outlines various degrees of difficulty based on experience, they are all a little bit crazy. Now, if he substituted, say, the 200 jumping jacks into 200 potato chips, I’d be there.

Adding to the challenge for the two-time World Cup winner? She’s eight months pregnant!

NASCAR: The NASCAR community came together on Sunday and had a full broadcast of a race... an e-sport race, that is. With the introduction of iRacing, some of the biggest names in racing came together to clash with one another on the virtual track. Denny Hamlin edged Junior in a thriller at Homestead – where this week’s actual race was supposed to take place – and FS1 broadcast it live with its normal team of Mike Joy and Jeff Gordon. Of course, Hamlin also got a stern talking to from his wife while winning.

Kevin Harvick, Jimmie Johnson and Kyle Larson were among other racers involved.
