
The 1956 Insurance City Open (long before it was known as the Travelers Championship) saw the first title win for one of golf's most iconic players. Learn about Arnold Palmer's noteworthy win in this great moment in Travelers Championship history.
The fifth edition of the local PGA Tour stop, the 1956 Insurance City Open couldn't be decided in 72 holds. Ted Kroll, who won the first event in 1952, finished regulation tied for the lead with a 26-year-old son of a Pennsylvania club pro. After the pair birdied the first playoff hole, Arnold Palmer birdied the second playoff hole to get his first title in this country. He would also win in Wethersfield in 1960, one iof his 62 wins on the PGA Tour.
