(HARTFORD, CONN. WTIC)-Comptroller Kevin Lembo, Attorney General William Tong and Health Care Advocate Ted Doolittle are calling on the Connecticut Insurance Department to reject proposed rate increases by the state's insurance companies.

The average increases for individual plans are 8.6%, those state officials said. Small group plans, including small businesses, average 12.9%.

Lembo called the proposed rate increases egregious. 168 thousand individuals have policies they can't afford and another 200-thousand lack coverage, he said.

During the pandemic, profits for the insurance companies skyrocketed, Lembo also said.

According to the insurance companies, the increases are needed to meet pent-up demand, an increase in behavioral health services and diabetic costs.

A virtual public hearing takes place Tuesday from 9 a.m. until noon.
