The Triple A Greater Hartford says demand for gas this month has dropped 14-percent from the same period last year. Spokesperson Amy Parmenter says a drop in demand is not out of the ordinary this time of year. But Parmenter calls the 14-percent decrease "staggering".
Parmenter says a couple of scenarios are responsible. "The most obvious is Covid, with more people home, fewer are driving." She says a second factor is strong supply, keeping prices lower.
The average price for a gallon of gas in Connecticut is $2.16. By region it's $2.23 in Bridgeport, $2.13 in Hartford, New Haven/Meriden is $2.14 and New London/Norwich is $2.17.
The national average is also $2.16, 50 cents lower than the same time last year.
