(Hartford, Conn. WTIC)-To combat hunger at institutions of higher learning, the legislature's Human Services Committee discussed a measure that will survey those institutions, while calling on them to evaluate services and programs to address the needs of food- insecure students.

The measure establishes a system with the Department of  Social Services for students who qualify to receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, making it  a seamless process.

Previous testimony indicated food insecurity is a real problem on college campuses, affecting one in three students. Advocates say hungry students suffer academically because of it.

Opponents who say the issue needs addressing, argue this measure is legislative overreach and that the measure's language needs tightening, lacking fiscal responsibility.
