(Washington, DC) - Miguel Cardona is a step closer to become the next U.S. secretary of education.
The Senate education committee moved to advance the Connecticut education commissioner's nomination to the full Senate.
Cardona, an educator who went through and led the Meriden school system before becoming commissioner, was approved by the committee on a 17-5 vote.
In a statement, Governor Lamont calls the committee's action "the latest step toward our country having a true ambassador for public education efforts across the nation".
Senator Chris Murphy says Cardona has the respect of Democrats and Republicans alike and will put students and teachers first as he embarks on his new position.
There's no word yet when the full Senate will take up Cardona's nomination.
