BOSTON (AP) - United Church of Christ congregations across southern New England have helped raise enough money to erase about $26 million in medical debt for about 20,000 families.

The churches in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island; four
church associations; and more than 100 households raised more than $200,000. The UCC says that money went to the New-York based nonprofit RIP Medical Debt. It bought debt in August from collection agencies for pennies on the dollar.

Over $8 million in medical debt for over 7,000 households in the Northeast will be
wiped out. Another nearly $18 million in debt for more than 12,000 health care
workers and first responders across the U.S. will also be erased.
