(Hartford, Conn./WTIC) - Simone Biles' withdrawl from two gymnastics events at the Tokyo Summer Olympics may have come as a shock to some.

But one local expert says it probably shouldn't have come as a complete surprise.

Dr. Melissa Santos is division chief of pediatric psychology at Connecticut Children's in Hartford.

She says on top of the weight of the world Biles was carrying, there's also another factor that may have been at play.

Santos says Biles, like so many others in the sport, is a sexual assault survivor that "didn't take care of her very well".

She says another thing to keep in mind is oftentimes, the public forgets how young these athletes still are, having gotten their start primarily as children.
