(Hartford, Conn.WTIC)-An injection of 184-million dollars in state aid has averted a strike by 21-hundred caregivers at six homes for the developmentally disabled. The strike was planned for six this morning.
The caregivers earn 14.75 an hour. SEIU Presient Rob Baril says the two-year agreement provides better wages and benefits, health insurance and a pathway to retirement.
Baril says the goal is for a 20-dollar an hour minimum wage. He says a defined benefit plan is crucial because at the current wage level, it's difficult to save for retirement.
The six group homes are owned by Journey Found, Mosaic, Network, Oak Hill, Sunrise and Whole Life.
The homes are non-profit agencies that are privately operated but publicly funded. Medicaid, state and federal dollars pay for the care.
Governor Lamont calls the agreement " a positive step forward for the workers as they will receive pay increases and more support."
