WETHERSFIELD, Conn. (WTIC Radio)—An inmate has died from complications related to COVID-19 on Friday, according to the Connecticut Department of Correction.

The 44-year-old man had several underlying comorbidities, department officials said, and he was transferred from the MacDougall-Walker Medical Isolation Unit to an outside hospital on Friday, where he succumbed to his illnesses.

"This is a solemn reminder that we must continue to do everything under our power to limit the spread of this persistent virus," Commissioner Designate Angel Quiros said.

The inmate was serving a 27-year sentence for four counts of Sexual Assault in the First Degree since June 2002, officials said.

His maximum release date was not set until 2027, officials said, and he was not eligible for parole until 2025.

The name of the inmate is not being released due to medical privacy laws.
