(East Hartford, Conn./WTIC) - Later today, one local town will launch an effort to close the digital divide.
In an aim they say will boost economic development, improve health care and education, a group of local and state elected officials will gather in East Hartford this afternoon to bring awareness to the digital divide.
They'll be announcing the first open access network in Connecticut.
It's dubbed East Hartford Fiber City, bringing with it a promise of a "fast, affordable and reliable all fiber network to homes, businesses, and town owned facilities".
The 40-million dollar project is privately funded and officials say will provide up to 10Gbps/10Gbp, the fatest residential speeds available in the U.S.

All 50-thousand residents and businesses are expected to benefit.
The announcement takes place at 12:30 from the East Hartford Senior Center.
