HARTFORD (WTIC Radio) -- Backers of a measure for universal free breakfasts for Connecticut students told a public hearing the need has grown.

Lucy Nolan, Policy Director for End Hunger Connecticut, said 400,000 more meals were served in Oct., 2023 than in the same month in 2022.

Advocates also commented that prices have increased 20-percent during that time frame.

Lawmakers stated that the need is evident, even in wealthier districts like Greenwich.

Newington State Representative Gary Turco expressed a desire to amend the financial guardrails within the budget to provide necessary funding for the meals.

Others lawmakers agreed, pointing to the fact that Connecticut sets aside needed funding for books, technical supplies, specials services and other student needs and that providing breakfasts and other meals are a cornerstone to proper learning.

The measure received a public-hearing--but no vote--before the
Appropriations Committee.
