Bristol, Conn./WTIC Radio - The Bristol City Council has given the go ahead to implement a red light camera ordinance.
The council this week voted 6-1 in favor.
That will allow the city to begin the process after it selected a vendor.
Mayor Ellen Zoppo-Sasu says the goal is to blunt reckless driving and protect residents.
Police Chief Mark Morello noted the there is a traffic crisis in nearly three dozen high crash intersections.
The chief also says there have been 90 serious crashes, 20 with fatalities, the last three years.
The vendor, Site Stream LLC, will start the application process with the state.
The police commission will recommend initial camera locations.
Data will not be shared outside Bristol and will be destroyed within 30 days of payment or a hearing resolution.
A first violation would be $50.
The second violation would bring a $75 fine.
