HARTFORD, CONN (WTIC Radio)-Housing advocates are looking for more rights for tenants.

Hannah Srajer President of the Connecticut Tenants Union said opposing expansion of the Just Cause Eviction law
means you support gentrification and mass displacements of mostly black and brown families, increasing the number of children in the community.


Tenants argue they're subjected to sometimes deplorable conditions, fearing retribution for reporting it.

Kelly DeMatteo, President the Connecticut Apartment Association said just cause is an effective tool that should remain that way. Further she said her association, with 67-thousand members, is not in the business of
evicting people, but rather housing them. She said one of the larger issues to be addressed is Connecticut's housing shortage.

Approximately one third of Connecticut residents are renters, looking to form
a state-wide tenants union.
