In the latest development on energy issues in Connecticut's 2026 gubernatorial race, Republican Betsy McCaughey announces she is suing the State of New York in a bid to lower the State's energy bills.

McCaughey, a former New York Lieutenant Governor, argues New York is violating the Interstate Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution by blocking a pipeline that would carry natural gas from Marcellus Shale region in Pennsylvania. The pipeline to convey it from Pennsylvania across New York and into Connecticut has been the subject of debate for over a decade.

In a release, McCaughey's campaign cites Laura Swett, Chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), and her testimony to Congress on February 2, 2026, that blocking the pipeline is causing New England consumers to pay as much as 300% higher rates for natural gas, which is currently imported from distant sources, including Canada and the nation's mid-section.

Governor Lamont's campaign released the following statement: "Governor Lamont has made lowering utility costs by expanding energy capacity a top priority. Offshore wind and other renewables are key, but real progress requires a balanced mix of nuclear, hydropower, and emerging technologies. Projects like Revolution Wind didn’t happen by accident—they happened because we had a governor willing to stand up to Donald Trump, not one busy trying to win his approval with stunts.”

McCaughey tells WTIC News that Lamont should have sued New York "years ago" and that she won't wait to be Governor to do so herself.
