An 80-year-old pilot was at the controls of the Piper six-seat turboprop.
While approaching Martha's Vineyard, the pilot suffered a medical emergency.
His passenger then took charge.
State police say the 68-year-old woman took over the controls and was able to make a hard-landing in the grass -- breaking the left wing in half.
She suffered only minor injuries, while the pilot is in a Boston hospital in serious condition, fighting for his life.
