BARKHAMSTED, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - Employees of a Dollar General in Barkhamsted voted Friday morning on whether or not to unionize, but those results won't be known for some time due to a pending investigation.

Between 9 and 10:30 a.m. on Friday, seven workers placed their votes. The results: two votes in favor of the union, three votes against the union and two challenged ballots.

"The two ballots that were challenged are going to go to Hartford with the National Labor Relations Board. Those challenges do determine the result of the election, so it's currently going to be investigated," UFCW Local 371 Organizing Director Jessica Petronella said.

The final outcome of the vote will not be determined until after the investigation. It's unclear, Petronella said, how long that process will take. It could take a couple of weeks, she said.

One of the challenged ballots was from an employee that Petronella said was fired due to union activity.

The National Labor Relations Board is investigating the termination after the UFCW Local 371 filed unfair labor practice charges against it on behalf of the Dollar General workers.

That action is one of many that the workers rallied against earlier this week, after the corporation used alleged intimidation tactics to block their organizing efforts, according to Petronella.
