The Town of East Hampton says 41 homes are being inspected Wednesday after a possible overnight power surge left residents in the dark.
Calls started coming in Tuesday night to the Town's Fire Department that some residents in the area of Hog Hill Road, Terp Lane, and Schoolhouse Lane started smelling smoke in their homes.
The Town says Eversource reported a malfunction with equipment and says door-to-door inspections are being done at each home to check circuit panels for damage.
The process to test each home takes around an hour and requires residents to unplug everything from outlets and unscrew lightbulbs from fixed structures.
East Hampton's Town Manager David Cox tells WTIC News homeowners are being encouraged to contact their homeowner's insurance, get an electrician, get the repairs completed, then submit for review to the Eversource Claims Department.
WTIC News has requested further comment from Eversource.
