Norwich, Conn. (WTIC Radio)-An early-morning fire displaced 21 residents as firefighters fought a blaze that burned through concealed spaces and narrow stairs, hampering access to the attic, according to the Norwich Fire Department. One firefighter suffered a minor hand injury and was treated at the scene. No civilian injuries were reported.

The fire was reported just after five on Fourteenth street at a multi-family home. The Fire Department said it deployed a hose line to prevent the neighboring building from catching fire.

Firefighters searched the top floor, on reports that a person was missing.  But the person was found outside the building. They rescued several cats and a bird.

A partial roof collapse forced firefighters to move outdoors and fight it defensively.

The Red Cross is assisting the 12 adults and nine children that were displaced.
Several area fire departments provided assistance.
