Former Senate GOP Leader Kelly tenders resignation

Hartford, Conn./WTIC Radio - The former Republican leader in the state Senate has resigned.

Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas says she received a resignation letter from Stratford Senator Kevin Kelly, effective Tuesday.

Kelly served seven terms in the Senate, first elected in 2010.

He was elected minority leader in 2020.

Kelly stepped down as Senate GOP leader in 2024.

In his resignation letter, Kelly said he was "grateful to the people of the 21st state Senate district for the trust and confidence they placed in me."

A special election will be held to choose Kelly's replacement.

In addition, Democratic State Representative Christine Conley of Groton announced she was leaving office, as well.
