Uncasville, Conn./WTIC Radio - A Connecticut basketball legend is retiring from the game.
Tina Charles, who won two national championships at UConn in 2009 and 2010, has announced her retirement from the WNBA.
Charles, 37, was drafted number one by the Connecticut Sun in 2010.
In a 15-year career, Charles averaged 17.8 points and nine rebounds per game.
Her career included two stints with the Sun, including last year when she averaged 16.3 ppg.
Charles journey included stops in her native New York, Atlanta, Washington, Seattle and Phoenix.
In a statement, the Sun said "From the moment Tina Charles stepped onto the court as the first overall pick in the 2010 WNBA Draft, she set a standard of excellence that would define not only her career, but our franchise as well. Today, we celebrate Tina—an extraordinary athlete and pillar of the Connecticut community—on an incredible basketball journey that began and fittingly concluded here in Connecticut."
The 6-4 Charles finishes her career as the WNBA's second all-time leading scorer behind Diana Taurasi.
