Hartford, Conn./WTIC Radio - Governor Lamont is calling for a review of safety cameras and automated license plate readers in response to residents concerns over privacy.
Lamont, in a letter Friday to the Connecticut Police Officers Standards and Training Council, is also calling for POST to develop guidance for local and state police when it comes to privacy provisions already part of state statute.
Lamont is also calling for a pause in the installation of new cameras and ALPRs until the guidance is put in place.
The governor said “I understand that this equipment is intended to keep our towns and roads safe—and that’s a good thing—but we must have clear policies in place regarding what is happening with this data, who has access to it, and how it can be used.”
This week, Groton Police Chief L.J. Fusaro with the Connecticut Police Chiefs Association reiterated to WTIC News that "we're using (this data) to solve crimes, to reunite people with their families, and are utilizing it to locate dangerous people."
