The Connecticut Department of Correction is investigating an inmate's assault on five staffers at the Hartford Correctional Center.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:15 a.m. on Wednesday, October 28, in the facility’s admitting and discharge property room.

Correctional staff responded immediately and secured the individual.

Three injured staff members were transported to an outside hospital for medical evaluation and treatment. Two additional staff members were evaluated and remained on duty.

“The safety and security of all Department of Correction employees remain our highest priority,” said Interim Commissioner Sharonda Carlos. “We recognize the serious concerns raised by this incident and will continue to ensure that our staff have the training, resources and support to perform their duties safely. I am grateful for the professionalism and swift response demonstrated by our staff, and I am committed to a thorough review of the circumstances surrounding this assault. I pray for a full and swift recovery of the injuries staff members.”

The AFSCME Council 4 union released the following statement on the situation:

Yet another assault on one of our Correction Officers has taken place, this time at Hartford Correctional Institution, on Wednesday, October 28th.

Without provocation, the inmate in question, who is incarcerated for the offense of First Degree Assault (i.e., Assault with a Deadly Weapon) and several other charges, approached our officer and punched him in the face. The inmate proceeded to resist the efforts of the responding officers; it took more than five Correction Officers to successfully restrain the inmate.

This inmate was arrested in 2024 after shooting a man in the stomach in East Hartford, but failing to kill him, resulting in his conviction for first-degree assault and several firearm-related felonies. At the time of his arrest, He was already facing a first-degree assault charge stemming from a separate incident in New Haven. A month after the New Haven incident, He was charged and convicted of another assault, this time for attacking public safety personnel. This means that by the age of 26, this inmate had accumulated at least five felonies and numerous other charges, stemming from three separate violent assaults.

As if his past charges are not enough proof of this inmate’s violent, assaultive behavior, yesterday’s assault on our Correction Officer took place as the inmate was being released from Restrictive Housing, a status that he was placed in due to another assault that he committed on a Correction Officer just last month.

When this brutal, unprovoked assault finally ended, our officer was left with his face swollen and bleeding profusely. He was transported to an area hospital for emergency medical care. According to medical personnel, our officer sustained a broken nose, a broken cheekbone, an orbital fracture, and a severe concussion.

Connecticut State Police are investigating the incident.
