MONTVILLE, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - The Groton man accused of killing and dismembering his roommate has died.
Donald Coffel, 68, of Groton, died on Friday at the Corrigan Correctional Center.
Officials with the Department of Correction say his death is not considered suspicious and the medical examiner will determine the official cause of his death.
Coffel had previously said he was fighting a battle with cancer.
He was charged with murder in the death of Suzanne Wormser, 58, of Groton.
Wormser's remains were found at the Colonel Ledyard Cemetery in Groton on March 19, helping to fuel rumors of a serial killer in New England.
During a police investigation, a witness told police Coffel had told them that Wormser had stolen $200 worth of crack cocaine from him and that he was planning to kill her.
