Willimantic, Conn./ WTIC Radio - A man is in the hospital after first responders say he was struck this morning by a tractor trailer truck while in a wheelchair.
Fire Chief Mark Scrivener says firefighters were returning from training just before 11 a.m. when they noticed the victim lying next to his wheelchair near the intersection of West Main Street and Cantor Drive.
Officials say as they were attending to the victim, the driver of the rig approached them and said the man ran into the rear wheels of the truck.
Paramedics arrived and rushed the victim to Windham Hospital.
He was then taken via LifeStar to Hartford Hospital to be treated for life-threatening injuries.
Willimantic police say West Main Street is closed from Main Street and Route 66 to the Route 6 ramps.
