Hartford, Conn./WTIC Radio - The man who attacked a Hartford state representative last summer on the streets of the capital city has learned his fate.

Andrey Desmond will spend the next five years in prison.

He assaulted Representative Maryam Khan last June as she left a prayer service with her family at the XL Center.

Desmond had previously pled guilty to attempted sexual assault, risk of injury and strangulation.

“What happened to me just over a year ago was tragic and will leave a mark on my life and all of those involved,” Rep. Khan said. “But I am proud to see some semblance of justice today. It is important to note that what occurred that day is far more common than we would care to admit."

As part of the sentence, Desmond must also serve 16 years of special parole.
