Meriden, Conn./WTIC Radio - Longtime Meriden city councilor Michael Rohde is stepping down.

A statement from City Hall says Rohde, 80, is stepping aside due to "serious physical health issues."

Rohde had served 25 years on the council, including a four-year stint as mayor.

The Dayton, Ohio native has lived in Meriden over 50 years.

“After more than three and a half decades in elected office, Mike Rohde has left a profound
impact on Meriden," said Mayor Kevin Scarpati.

Rohde also served as chair of the Meriden Flood Control Implementation Agency, which resolved over a century of flooding issues in the city's downtown.

The statement also says the city's public high schools were also renovated during Rohde's tenure as mayor.
